TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has emerged as one of the most talked-about names in this summer's transfer window. The 22-year-old Slovenian international has attracted serious interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Both Premier League clubs have reportedly submitted official offers to RB Leipzig. Newcastle's proposal is said to exceed Manchester United’s in value. Although Sesko is believed to be open to joining either side, he appears to be leaning toward a move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United has submitted a €74 million offer, which remains lower than Newcastle's second proposal. Newcastle had previously made an initial bid of €70 million plus bonuses. So far, neither club has reached an agreement with Leipzig.
United continues to hold talks with the Bundesliga side after their first offer of €65 million plus an €8.9 million bonus.
Newcastle, meanwhile, returned with a revised bid of €69.7 million plus additional incentives, an offer now under internal review by RB Leipzig, according to Sky Sports Germany.
Sesko was notably absent during RB Leipzig’s pre-season friendly against Atalanta last Saturday. His absence is widely believed to be connected to the ongoing transfer situation. The player has already informed his teammates of his intention to leave and trained separately from the main squad at the club’s training ground on Tuesday.
Newcastle has moved quickly in their attempt to land Sesko, especially after turning down a €110 million plus bonuses offer from Liverpool for their striker Alexander Isak. Should Sesko end up joining Newcastle, it could have implications for Isak’s future at the club.
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie revealed that Sesko prefers a move to Manchester United over Newcastle.
"He is open to both moves and it is not that he is against Newcastle – but if it came to the two, Manchester United would be the choice," he said.
Downie added that the latest update from Leipzig remains unclear. "It is a confusing situation," he said.
While Leipzig is reportedly leaning toward sending Sesko to Newcastle, the club is ultimately allowing the player to make the final decision.
"It feels, from the noises we are hearing, that Leipzig will leave it up to the player to decide. We have not heard the last of this one. There will be more negotiations to come," Downie noted.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Sesko has also sparked speculation about Rasmus Hojlund’s role at the club. United is expected to be open to reasonable offers for the Danish forward.
Despite this, manager Ruben Amorim’s side may still proceed with signing another striker even if Hojlund stays, as long as the club makes at least one additional player sale before the transfer window closes.
Regardless of where Sesko ends up, the question remains whether he can prove himself against some of the Premier League’s top forwards. Over the past two seasons with RB Leipzig, Sesko has scored 39 goals in 87 appearances.
