BMKG Issues Early Warning for Heavy Rain in Greater Jakarta Area

11 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rain fell again in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area. On Sunday evening, March 8, 2026, moderate to heavy rain first covered the Cisarua, Megamendung, and surrounding areas in Bogor Regency.

The rain then spread to parts of Bogor City and Bogor Regency, especially in the northwest or those bordering Greater Tangerang. The potential for further spread also encompasses the entire Regency and City of Tangerang, as well as South Tangerang City.

Other areas include parts of Depok City, South Jakarta, West Jakarta, and North Jakarta. All of this information is based on the Greater Jakarta weather early warning from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), which is in effect from 9:10 PM to 12:00 AM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Previously, throughout Saturday morning and Sunday morning, March 7-8, 2026, heavy rain fell evenly across the Greater Jakarta area. The rain was particularly heavy on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The rainfall distribution map, made by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), during that period, shows extreme rainfall occurring in the coastal areas of Tangerang Regency and along the southeast-northwest line to the border areas of East Jakarta, Depok City, Bekasi City, and Bekasi Regency.

Rainfall figures recorded included 176 mm in Sunter Hulu and 151 mm in the Arcadia area. According to the BMKG classification, rainfall exceeding 150 mm per day is considered extreme rainfall. Most other areas were mapped as receiving very heavy rainfall (100-150 mm in 24 hours).

Through its Weather Outlook for March 6-12, the BMKG warned that Jakarta and its surrounding areas should be on alert for the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall on March 6-8. This early warning was not extended to March 9-12.

During the same weekly period, the BMKG predicted that atmospheric dynamics, from global to local scales, would influence the weather in Indonesia in general. The Asian monsoon was predicted to strengthen, and the cold surge phenomenon was also predicted to remain significant.

There is also the influence of Tropical Cyclone 90S, which is predicted to remain in the Indian Ocean southwest of East Java; Cyclone 93S is predicted to be in the waters west of Western Australia; and Cyclone 92P is predicted to be in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Meanwhile, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is predicted to remain in phase 5 (Maritime Continent), contributing to the formation of rain clouds in Eastern Indonesia. This potential for rain is reinforced by the predicted active Kelvin Waves in Aceh, North Sumatra, southern Kalimantan, southern West Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, and northern Papua.

Equatorial Rossby Waves are also predicted to be active in southern West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), southern East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Maluku, and almost all of Papua Island. "The combination of these phenomena has the potential to trigger increased rainfall in these areas," reads the BMKG statement.
