BNPB: 975,000 People Displaced by Sumatra Floods as Death Toll Reaches 921

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, stated that 975,000 people were displaced by the floods in Sumatra. This figure represents the total number of evacuees in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as of December 7, 2025.

"As of today, we report that 921 people have died, 392 are missing, and 975,075 people have been displaced," Suharyanto told Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during a disaster management coordination meeting at the Aceh Integrated Disaster Management Command Post, Sultan Iskandar Muda Air Force Base, Aceh, on Sunday evening, December 7, 2025, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

According to the BNPB's geoportal for emergency flood and landslide management data for the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, the death toll reached 940 as of Sunday afternoon.

Suharyanto stated that the highest number of displaced people was in Aceh Province, with 914,202 deaths. Meanwhile, 366 people died and 97 people are missing in Aceh.

"For Aceh, we report that two regencies are still experiencing significant isolated areas: Aceh Bener Meriah and Central Aceh. There are still hundreds of villages or sub-districts affected," Suharyanto said.

In Bener Meriah Regency, there are 232 isolated villages, and in Central Aceh, there are 295 isolated villages across 14 sub-districts. Suharyanto stated that Aceh Tamiang, which was previously isolated, can now receive aid from land, although the number of villages still affected stands at 216.

President Prabowo led a coordination meeting on flood and landslide management in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra after inspecting affected locations in Aceh Province on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

During the meeting, Prabowo informed his staff that he had personally observed the conditions in Bireuen Regency, Aceh. The head of state personally observed the construction of the Bailey Bridge by the Ministry of Public Works and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).

"I see that the work is progressing well. Hopefully, it will be operational within a week, so that subsequent bridges can begin to open," Prabowo said when opening the meeting, as quoted by the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

President Prabowo gathered several members of the Red and White Cabinet at the meeting. Those present included Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Lieutenant General Suharyanto, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, and Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin.

Also in attendance were the Head of the Government Communications Agency, Angga Raka Prabowo, Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, Minister of Housing Maruarar Sirait, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo, Governor of Aceh Muzakir Manaf, Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) General Agus Subiyanto, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army General Maruli Simanjuntak, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force Air Chief Marshal M. Tonny Harjono.

This was President Prabowo's second visit to Aceh since it was hit by flash floods and landslides on November 25, 2025.
