TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shieny Aprilia, a leading figure in Indonesia’s gaming industry, has called on the government not to rush into banning online games such as Roblox. She emphasized the importance of regulations that protect minors without stifling industry growth or harming consumers.
Shieny, CEO and Co-Founder of Agate, voiced support for the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi)’s efforts to address complaints about Roblox, which has come under scrutiny for allegedly exposing minors to harmful content. However, she cautioned that sudden blocking is not the right solution.
“The intention is good, but technically it shouldn’t just be about blocking. The regulations must be truly effective,” Shieny told reporters in Kemang, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
She acknowledged that the government has both the authority and responsibility to protect children from harmful digital exposure. Still, she believes the approach should be measured rather than reactive. “Surely there will be those who are happy and unhappy, that’s the challenge,” she said.
Komdigi Minister Meutya Viada Hafid previously urged Roblox to comply with Indonesia’s child protection rules, noting growing concerns among parents and educators. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has even advised students to avoid the platform.
“This improvement ensures that Indonesian children are protected from potentially harmful content and interactions in the digital space,” Meutya said in a statement on August 14, 2025.
Meutya also stressed that as an Electronic System Provider (PSE) registered in Indonesia since 2022, Roblox must help foster a safe and productive online environment. “Platforms must prioritize the safety of young users so that Indonesia’s digital space remains a comfortable place to learn, play, and create,” she added.
