Chronology of Bali Student's Death That Exposed Alleged Campus Bullying

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A student from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Udayana University, Bali, Indonesia, Timothy Anugerah Saputra, was declared dead on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

According to reports, Timothy died after jumping from the second floor of the FISIP building that morning.

The incident has drawn public attention amid allegations that Timothy was a victim of bullying by fellow students. The claims emerged after screenshots of a WhatsApp group chat, allegedly belonging to Timothy’s classmates, began circulating online.

The screenshots revealed several insensitive and mocking comments about Timothy’s death. One message read, “Why jump from the second floor? That’s not high enough,” to which another replied, “Exactly.”

Other messages made light of funeral costs and cargo fees for transporting Timothy’s remains to his hometown in Bandung, West Java.

“Cargo is expensive these days, now he’s gone crazy,” one user wrote, while another added, “A coffin alone costs millions, not to mention cargo fees, around 30 million rupiah gone.”

Udayana University later confirmed the authenticity of the screenshots through an official statement posted on its Instagram account, @univ.udayana, on Friday, October 17.

The university clarified that the conversation took place after Timothy’s death and was not related to the cause of the incident.

“It can be confirmed that the conversation occurred after the deceased passed away, not before the incident,” the statement said.

Udayana University stressed that the remarks circulating online were not the cause of Timothy’s death.

“The insensitive comments shared on social media are not connected to or the reason behind the student’s decision to jump from the building,” it stated.

However, the university said it would continue to investigate the case. Its Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence (Satgas PPK) has been assigned to follow up on the incident and question students involved in the WhatsApp conversation.

“Udayana University will not hesitate to impose strict sanctions if any students are proven to have committed violence, bullying, or any act that undermines academic integrity,” the university said, while condemning “all forms of insensitive speech, verbal abuse, and violence, both online and offline.”

In a related move, the Political Science Student Association (Himapol) of FISIP Udayana announced on Friday, October 17, that it had dismissed four of its executive members allegedly involved in the bullying.

The dismissal letter, signed by Himapol Chair Pande Made Estu Prajanaya and dated October 16, listed the names of the expelled students:

  • Vito Simanungkalit, Deputy Head of the External Department

  • Muhammad Riyadh Alvitto Satriyaji Pratama, Head of the Strategic Studies and Education Department

  • Maria Victoria Viyata Mayos, Head of the External Department

  • Anak Agung Ngurah Nanda Budiadnyana, Deputy Head of the Talent and Interests Department

Two members of Udayana’s Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Student Executive Board (BEM) were also dismissed for alleged involvement:

  • Jonathan Handika Putra, Deputy Chair of BEM

  • Putu Ryan Abel Perdana Tirta, Chair of Commission II of the FISIP Student Representative Council (DPM).

Udayana University Student Executive Board (BEM) President I Wayan Arma Surya Darmaputra said the organization would ensure accountability in the case.

“We are monitoring this case closely until the university officially issues sanctions against the perpetrators,” he told Tempo on Saturday, October 18, 2025.

Tempo has contacted Togar Mangihut Simatupang, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, for comment and further clarification regarding Timothy’s death. As of Saturday afternoon, October 18, Tempo’s message had been read but not yet answered.
