The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Indonesia Falls to 122nd in Latest FIFA Rankings
The Indonesian national team has dropped three ranks in the latest FIFA list released on Friday, October 17, 2025. The Garuda squad now occupies the 122nd position in the world, down from the 119th rank, which was one of the best achievements in recent years.
This decline happened after poor results in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. During that time, Indonesia suffered two defeats, 2-3 against Saudi Arabia and 0-1 against Iraq. These two negative results had a significant impact on Indonesia's FIFA points.
Despite showing high spirits, Joey Pelupessy and his teammates failed to match the experience and quality of opponents who were far above their ranking. The defeats not only thwarted Indonesia's journey to the final round and the fifth round, but also caused the national team's position to drop in the world ranking.
2. Indonesia and Australia Step Up Joint Military Exercises
The Head of the Australian Defense Force (ADF), Admiral David Johnston, said that the partnership with Indonesia is being realized by increasing the number of joint military exercises.
During a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, October 17, 2025, Johnston noted that the increase in joint military exercises underscores Indonesia's importance to Australia.
"The Chief of the Australian Defense Force will always monitor activities around us. As neighbors, Australia realizes the importance of stability, security, and the sovereignty of Indonesia, which are also important for Australia's security," he said.
Johnston added that the partnership between the two countries has become closer after the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement.
3. Indonesia Eyeing to Create 9 Million Digital Talents by 2030
The Ministry of Communication and Digital is targeting 9 million digital talents in Indonesia by 2030, coinciding with the peak of the productive age demographic bonus. This target will be achieved through the Digital Talent Scholarship (DTS) training programs, especially for young people.
The ministry is coordinating with leading tech companies such as Huawei, Microsoft, Google, and Meta to formulate methods, materials, and a roadmap for the implementation of the program.
"These global tech companies will play a role in providing information to the Ministry of Communication and Digital about the developments in the world of technology and the current field conditions," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, at the Digital Talent Forum in Jakarta, on Friday, October 17, 2025.
By 2030, Indonesia is expected to experience a demographic bonus, where 64-68 percent, or approximately 208 million of its population will be dominated by the productive age group (15-60 years).
