TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, apologized after a demonstration at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Thursday, August 28, 2025, resulted in the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan.

Puan delivered the apology a day after the protest, which was triggered by the issue of parliamentary member allowances.

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle politician apologized because the DPR has not fully carried out its duties. She stated that the House of Representatives will improve its ability to listen to the public’s aspirations more effectively.

"On behalf of all members and leaders of the House of Representatives, we apologize if we have not been able to fully carry out our duties as representatives of the people," Puan said in a video statement on Friday, August 29, 2025.

Puan promised that the DPR will foster healthy communication in nation-building. "Together, we must always be self-aware, work hard, and pray so that incidents and tragedies like this never happen again," she added.

She said all leaders and members of the House of Representatives deeply mourn the tragedy and expressed condolences to the late Affan Kurniawan.

"May his good deeds be accepted by Allah SWT, and may his family be given strength, patience, and endurance," said Puan, the daughter of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri.

She also urged the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into Affan’s death. Puan emphasized that members of the House of Representatives are concerned about the violence experienced by the demonstration participants.

"We will oversee the investigation process until it is completed," she said.

In the apology video, Puan appeared wearing all black with a black headscarf while delivering her message.

Affan Kurniawan, the motorcycle taxi driver, died after being crushed by a tactical vehicle operated by the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) of the Jakarta Metro Police. The incident occurred as police dispersed the demonstration on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Rumah Susun Bendungan Hilir II area in Central Jakarta.

General Listyo Sigit Prabowo apologized for the incident, stating that the tragedy will be evaluated to improve police procedures.

"We will follow up on the incident. I apologize to the victim's family and to the wider online motorcycle taxi community for what happened," Sigit said outside the RSCM morgue early on Friday.
