TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Emirates Airlines will ban the use of power banks on its flights starting from October 1, 2025. Passengers are still allowed to bring one power bank that meets certain requirements. This new regulation is part of the efforts to enhance passenger safety.
Power banks are considered essential items for travelers. These rechargeable portable devices are designed to provide power for smartphones, tablets, laptops, cameras, and other electronic devices. They make it easy for travelers to stay connected.
Safety Reasons
In a statement by the Dubai-based national airline, the new restriction on the use of power banks is part of their ongoing commitment to enhance safety for passengers and crew.
"There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry," the airline stated, as quoted from Time Out.
Power banks usually use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which contain suspended lithium ions in an electrolyte solution. During charging and discharging, these ions move between the electrodes inside the battery. If the battery is overcharged or damaged, it can lead to "thermal runaway."
Thermal runaway in a battery is an automatic acceleration process where the heat generated inside the battery cell exceeds its ability to dissipate heat, resulting in rapid and uncontrollable temperature increase. This can lead to dangerous consequences such as fire, explosion, and release of toxic gas.
Modern smartphones and lithium battery-powered devices are now equipped with internal safety mechanisms to regulate charging to prevent overcharging. Basic power banks might not have this protection, which increases the risk of battery failure.
Regulations for Bringing Power Banks on Board
Considering the increasing number of passengers carrying and using power banks on board, Emirates is striving to reduce the risk by prohibiting their use on the aircraft. However, passengers may bring power banks that meet specific requirements.
As reported by Gulf News, based on the new rules, passengers may bring one power bank with a capacity below 100 watt-hours (Wh) on board, provided that the battery capacity is clearly stated. Power banks may not be used during the flight. This includes charging personal devices or the power bank itself using the aircraft's socket.
Passengers are also required to stow the power bank in the seat pocket or a bag under the seat in front of them, and in a place easily accessible by the cabin crew. This placement enables trained staff to respond quickly to a fire caused by a power bank. The device is strictly prohibited from being placed in the cabin or checked baggage compartment, and storage in checked baggage remains the applicable rule.
