TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - F1: The Movie immediately soars to the top of the North American box office during its opening weekend. Data released by Comscore on Sunday, June 29, 2025, shows that the film has grossed US$55.6 million in the North American region, earning US$144 million globally.
Quoting Antaranews, the movie starring Brad Pitt tells the story of Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 racer from the 1990s whose career came to a halt due to a tragic accident. After three decades of living in despair as a paid racer at small circuits and burdened with debts, Sonny gets a second chance when his former colleague, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), offers him the last racing seat in an F1 team grappling with disbandment after not scoring a single point in two and a half years.
Sonny, dismissed as a "dark horse," is asked to mentor a talented young racer, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), and at the same time becomes the team's last hope to survive in the competition. The intergenerational dynamics between Sonny and Joshua become a central part of the story, strengthened by the character Kate (Kerry Condon), a stern and visionary technical director.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer along with racer Lewis Hamilton, F1: The Movie offers more than just fast-paced races. The film addresses the theme of second chances, failure, and shelved dreams, combined with stunning immersive visuals thanks to Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda.
Racing shots in the film forgo CGI and are done directly by Pitt and Idris, which invites the audience to feel what it's like in a racing cockpit.
Several legendary circuits around the world, such as Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Hungaroring, and Zandvoort, serve as the actual setting in this film. The bustling atmosphere of the stadium, waving flags, and the roar of engines are visualized with precision to deliver a thrilling and elegant viewing experience.
In addition to its technical excellence, F1: The Movie also incorporates messages about the importance of teamwork, collective struggle, and personal battles behind the camera spotlight. Sonny Hayes, with his composure and scars, becomes a symbol for those who dare to face challenges, even without the certainty of victory.
This 2-hour 35-minute film has received positive responses from the audience. F1: The Movie is "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with an 83% score, while CinemaScore gave the film an "A" rating. This indicates tremendous satisfaction from the audience during its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, perching in second place is the live action of the animated film How to Train Your Dragon, produced by DreamWorks Animation, which grossed US$19.4 million in its third weekend. While the animated film Elio, produced by Pixar, took the third position with US$10.7 million in its second weekend, collecting a total of US$42.2 million in North America.
