Fact Check: Did Turkey Showcase 5,500-km Long-Range Missiles?

7 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A video claiming that Erdogan threatened Israel and that Turkey showcased missiles with a range of 5,500 kilometers circulated on Instagram [archive] on April 20, 2026. The post showed a convoy of Turkish military vehicles carrying several missiles. The content claimed that the missile was capable of flattening Tel Aviv in a single strike.

But is it true that Turkey showcased its missiles?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content through reverse image searches, AI detection tools, and reports from credible media outlets. The results show that the 12-second video is a product of AI.

According to the website Middleeasteye.net, the Turkish government issued a statement on Monday, April 13, 2026, in response to a Daily Telegraph report titled “Erdogan threatens to attack Israel.” The report was confirmed to be completely baseless. The statement was posted on the X account of the Turkish government’s Disinformation Management Center (DMM).

“The statements in these posts do not reflect the facts and constitute a narrative aimed at undermining regional stability,” the DMM wrote in its post.

The Turkish government stated that manipulative content distorting their humanitarian efforts and stance should not be trusted. Turkey will continue to be a voice for justice and peace in the region. The article appears to be based on a statement made by the Turkish President two years ago that was taken out of context.

The Telegraph finally removed the article on Monday morning, and a senior editor stated via X, “We have removed the article. The quotes appear to be outdated or fabricated.”

There is no information indicating that Turkey has showcased a missile with a range of 5,500 kilometers. Turkey’s longest-range ballistic missile currently is the Tayfun, which exceeds 500 kilometers. Haluk Görgün, President of the Defense Industries Agency (SSB), confirmed that Turkey successfully conducted the third test of the short-range Tayfun ballistic missile on February 3, with a range of 561 kilometers.

Video Verification

Tempo identified several inconsistencies after analyzing the video footage. The wheels of the military vehicle transporting the missile did not rotate at all while moving. The Turkish flag also appeared to be floating without a visible pole. Additionally, Erdogan’s lip movements while speaking appeared stiff and out of sync with the words being spoken.

Evidence that this video is a product of AI-generated content becomes even clearer with the faint text “pixverse.ai” in the top right corner. This serves as direct proof that the content was created using the AI video generation platform PixVerse.

The PixVerse watermark is faintly visible in the circulating video clip.
