Fact Check: Viral Video of Iran Striking IDF Bunker Only Partially True

7 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A video claiming an Iranian Sejjil missile penetrated an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bunker has been circulating on Instagram [archive] and Facebook. The post shows an explosion among a high-rise building and a crowd of residents near the scene. The video's narrative claims the attack killed 20 people and injured 200 others.

However, does the video actually show an Iranian missile exploding at an IDF base?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the content through a reverse image search and compared the narrative with credible information. The verification results show that one of the clips captures the aftermath of an Iranian rocket attack on a bunker in Israel, but the shelter belonged to a civilian, not the IDF.

A comparison of video clips in the circulating content with the original footage uploaded by The Washington Post and The Guardian.

The first clip has been reported by several media outlets, including The Washington Post and The Guardian. The footage shows a warehouse explosion in the port area of Beirut, Lebanon, in August 2020. A fire engulfed more than 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate, triggering the largest non-nuclear explosion in history. Investigations by France24 and Teyit have refuted allegations that the explosion was caused by a missile attack.

Comparing a video of officers dispersing residents at the site of the explosion with one previously uploaded by the Jordanian media outlet Roya News on YouTube.

The second clip shows officers dispersing residents at the site of the explosion. This video was uploaded to the YouTube account of the Jordanian media outlet Roya News on March 1, 2026. The footage shows the aftermath of an Iranian ballistic missile strike that destroyed an Israeli civilian bunker in Beit Shemesh, not an IDF base. Israeli media outlets Bhol.co.id and 13newsil/13tv.co.il confirmed this information.

The incident killed nine people and injured 28 others, including children. Several victims were injured while inside the shelter when the explosion occurred.

The circulating narrative states that Iran's Sejjil missile launch occurred on April 20, 2026. However, Kurdistan24 media outlets reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) first used the solid-fuel missile on March 15, 2026.

The attack targeted an Israeli air operations management center, as well as military industrial infrastructure and an assembly point in the heart of Israel. However, no details were provided regarding the launch time, location of the target, or the impact of the attack. Iran Watch did not report any damage to IDF headquarters as a result of the IRGC attack.

CONCLUSION

Tempo's verification concluded that the narrative claiming that the circulating video showed the impact of a Sejjil missile attack on an IDF bunker was partially true.
