TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Heavy rain triggered flash floods along the Guadalupe River in Texas, United States. The natural disaster has claimed at least 24 lives and left 25 others missing. Rescue teams are still searching for dozens of victims trapped by the high waters or reported missing in the disaster.
Among the missing are 23 to 25 people, who were participants in a special summer camp for girls located on the banks of the Guadalupe River, which was pelted by rain, said authorities quoted by Al Jazeera.
Panicked parents in Texas have been posting photos of their young daughters on social media and seeking information. "What I can confirm at this point, we’re at about 24 fatalities," said Sheriff Kerr County Larry Leitha in a press conference on Friday night, July 4, 2025. He later confirmed that 24 people had died.
The U.S. National Weather Service has declared a flash flood emergency for parts of Kerr County, located in the central-southern region of the Texas Hill Country. The flash flood occurred after heavy rains of up to 300 mm (12 inches).
Dalton Rice, the city manager of Kerrville, the county seat, told reporters that the extreme flood occurred before dawn. The flood hit suddenly, preventing the authorities from ordering an evacuation.
"This happened very quickly, over a very short period of time that could not be predicted, even with the radar," said Rice. "This happened within less than a two-hour span."
Earlier in the day, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said about six to 10 bodies had been found. Based on updated information, there are 13 other bodies due to the flood.
Patrick said 23 girls were reported missing out of over 700 children at the summer camp. The camp was swept away by the flood around 4 a.m. local time.
Among the missing victims, there are children. "I’m asking the people of Texas, do some serious praying this afternoon. On-your-knees kind of praying, that we find these young girls," said Patrick.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a disaster declaration to expedite emergency aid to Kerr and several additional areas most severely affected by the flood.
As quoted from Sky News, as of Friday night, emergency personnel had rescued or evacuated 237 people, including 167 people by helicopter, according to Major General Thomas Suelzer, the adjutant general for the state of Texas.
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One that the flood was terrible. He said they are working with Governor Greg Abbott.
