TEMPO.COJakartaQatar sent an official letter to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on Saturday to condemn the Israeli airstrike on September 9 in Doha. The strike, which targeted the settlement of Hamas political bureau members, resulted in casualties.

According to the QNA news agency, as quoted by Anadolu, the letter was submitted to the President of the ICAO Council by Abdullah Al-Malki, Qatar's permanent representative to ICAO.

In the letter, Qatar emphasized that the attack was a "flagrant violation of its sovereignty and the provisions of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation." The Gulf state asserted that it "retains all its rights under international law."

Earlier, on September 9, Israel had targeted a settlement complex in Doha near foreign embassies. The attack claimed the lives of five Hamas members as they were discussing the U.S. proposal to end the Israeli genocide in Gaza, where nearly 65,200 Palestinian civilians have been killed since October 2023.

Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its warfare in the region.

A separate report from Channel 12 stated that Qatar is demanding a public apology from Israel for the attack. The report added that this apology has been set as a precondition for Qatar to continue its role as a mediator in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Qatar has played a key role in mediation efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas. Israel's operation in Doha has drawn strong condemnation from the international community.
