TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A police tactical vehicle ran over an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver amid post-protest unrest in front of the House of Representatives/People's Consultative Assembly (DPR/MPR) building. The victim was declared dead.

Ade Mulya, Director of Public Affairs & Communications at PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO), stated that the company will provide compensation for the victim. "We will provide compensation to the victim's family as a form of our support to the victim," said Ade in the early hours of Friday, August 29, 2025.

Ade also guaranteed that the company will cover all funeral arrangement costs. "So far, we have facilitated the ambulance, autopsy, and post-mortem examination," said Ade when met by reporters outside the mortuary at RSCM.

Chair of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI) Lily Pujiati previously confirmed that the ojol driver who was run over by a police tactical vehicle was declared dead on Thursday night. "The body is at the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital," said Lily when confirmed by Tempo tonight.

The incident occurred right in front of the Bendungan Hilir II flats. "There was an ojol driver who fell and was hit. But the vehicle did not stop, but continued and ran over the victim," said one of the residents of the flats, Kevin, on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.

Kevin recounted that initially, the police detained protesters in the area around the Pejompongan gas station. Around 7:25 PM, the police tactical vehicle suddenly sped through the street without paying attention to the gathering crowd.

Based on a copy of the video received by Tempo, the tactical vehicle appeared to continue driving even though the victim was lying injured. Some protesters were seen trying to chase after and stop the car.

In addition to running over the ojol driver, the police also fired tear gas towards the flats. "Residents on the tenth floor of the flats are still smelling tear gas," said Kevin.

According to Kevin, the tear gas was fired by the police from a distance of about 10 to 20 meters from the entrance gate of the flats. "Elderly people and children near the gate also got affected by the tear gas," said Kevin.
