Government Honors Late Indonesian Hospital Director Killed in Gaza

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan expressed his condolences for the passing of Marwan Al Sultan, the Director of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, a few days ago. The former Chief of the State Intelligence Agency stated that Marwan was an exemplary figure who chose to serve in a sacred yet meaningful field of work.

"We express our highest appreciation for the services and dedication of the late Marwan," said Budi in a written statement released by the ministry on Friday, July 4, 2025. The retired police general conveyed sincere sympathies and heartfelt prayers to Marwan's family and the medical team still serving in Gaza.

Budi emphasized that the Indonesian government continues to uphold the principles of international humanitarianism. "Especially the protection of healthcare facilities and medical personnel in conflict areas," he said.

Marwan passed away due to an Israeli attack on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The attack targeted the apartment building where he lived with his family. According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Marwan, his wife, and several of their children died in the attack.

The Indonesian humanitarian organization MER-C confirmed that Marwan and his family died in a direct attack on their residence. Marwan died alongside nine Palestinian citizens in that attack, as stated in MER-C's official social media account.

The Indonesian Hospital in Gaza has repeatedly been targeted by Israeli gunfire since the aggression against the territory began on October 7, 2023. The healthcare facility was last attacked by Israel at the end of May, resulting in severe structural damage and hindering local healthcare services.

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin will visit the security situation at the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Palestine, following Marwan's death. Budi will determine the necessary actions to ensure the safety of Indonesian medical personnel there.

"I will have a look because we have already brought back some medical personnel," said Budi after attending a meeting with the Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
