TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that the Indonesian government promises to take decisive action against the perpetrators of the attack on two individuals during the post-protest riot on August 27, 2026. Yusril urges the public to exercise restraint and not jump to conclusions regarding the riot incident that occurred in the area of Jalan Pejompongan Raya, Central Jakarta.
He mentioned that the Jakarta Metropolitan Police are still investigating the cause of the riot, including the death of a Pejompongan resident named Bambang Setiawan, as well as the assault on a 12th-grade student named Faturrohman.
"An in-depth investigation is being carried out to determine who gave the orders, who initiated the violence, and who committed the assault," said Yusril in a written statement to journalists in Jakarta on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Once evidence and facts have been obtained, Yusril promised that anyone proven to have committed a criminal act would be prosecuted according to the law. He emphasized that the authorities have not yet implicated any individuals, social groups, or specific social organizations.
"Law enforcement agencies do not accuse anyone involved in the acts of assault, whether individuals, groups, or specific organizations. Therefore, I urge the public not to be easily provoked by unverified information," said Yusril.
According to Yusril, the assault that resulted in Bambang's death and Faturrohman's serious injuries occurred after the protesters left the Parliament (DPR) building. The situation turned violent, and clashes broke out among groups of residents in the Pejompongan area.
Yusril also urged that this incident not be used as a pretext for retaliatory actions or new acts of violence. "Let's leave the process to law enforcement and together let's maintain the peace and order of society," Yusril said.
The former Minister of Justice and Human Rights urged the public to remain calm. He expressed his appreciation for the participants, including the protesters who came from Pati and other regions, as well as the students who peacefully expressed their aspirations.
Two residents from Pejompongan, Central Jakarta, became victims of the post-protest riot on the night of Thursday to early Friday, August 27, 2026. A resident and a mirror trader named Bambang Setiawan, 60, was beaten to death while about to close his shop.
Meanwhile, another resident named Faturrohman, 18 years old, suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by a group of people suspected to be members of a social organization.
Users of social media accused the United Indonesian People's Movement (GRIB Jaya) led by Rosario de Marshall alias Hercules of being involved in the assault. The accusation surfaced after a video showed Hercules at the riot scene with his followers.
GRIB Jaya denied the allegations. The Head of the Legal Division of the Central Leadership Council of GRIB Jaya, Wilson Colling, stated that Hercules was at the scene not to participate in the protest that led to the riot. He mentioned that his client came to observe the security situation and conditions at the time of the incident.
"The presence was part of persuasive efforts to monitor the situation and maintain a conducive environment, not to aggravate the situation, provoke, or be involved in physical clashes," Wilson said in his written statement on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
