Hamas Weighs New Ceasefire Offer, Urges End to Gaza War

6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, JakartaHamas has announced that it is currently reviewing a new proposal for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza. However, the group emphasizes that any sought-after agreement must truly end the war and guarantee the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the region.

As reported by Al Jazeera, Hamas stated in an official statement on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, that it has received several proposals from mediators. The group is now engaged in dialogue with these mediators to bridge differences in order to return to the negotiating table and reach an agreement.

Proposal Supported by U.S., Qatar, and Egypt

Palestinian sources, cited by Anadolu on Thursday, July 3, mentioned that Hamas has not yet made a final decision on the proposals submitted by Qatar and Egypt, which include a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.

"Hamas is currently consulting with various Palestinian factions before submitting its official response to the mediators," the source said.

According to the same source, the United States, Egypt, and Qatar have offered guarantees to support this agreement, although the specific details of these guarantees were not disclosed. Turkey is also mentioned as a potential guarantor country.

Several technical discussions are still underway, including the mechanism for distributing humanitarian aid, the detailed map for the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and arrangements for the 60-day post-ceasefire period. This proposal also includes the possibility of extending the ceasefire if two months prove insufficient to reach a permanent agreement.

Pressure from the U.S.

A day before Hamas's statement, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that Israel had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire proposal. He urged Hamas to accept the agreement before the situation deteriorates further, adding that the 60-day ceasefire would be used to negotiate a permanent end to the war.

Nevertheless, Israel has maintained that it will not cease hostilities until Hamas is defeated. Trump is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next week to discuss the next steps.

Israel Threatens Further Attacks

Shortly after Hamas announced its position, Netanyahu reiterated that there would be no Hamas presence in Gaza after the war. Several Israeli officials warned of escalating military operations if negotiations do not show progress.

"We’ll do to Gaza City and the central camps what we did to Rafah. Everything will turn to dust," said one senior Israeli official.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said that the opportunity to free Israeli hostages should not be missed. Meanwhile, the number of casualties continues to rise. Since October 2023, over 57,100 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza.
