TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Celebrating New Year's Eve in 2026 was different in Jakarta. In the midst of the grief caused by flash floods and landslides in Sumatra, the holiday was marked by empathy and solidarity. From the cancellation of fireworks to drone shows, this year, New Year's celebrations became moments of empathy and solidarity. See below for a summary of the important events of New Year's Eve 2026.
1. Jakarta Without Fireworks
The Jakarta Provincial Government canceled the fireworks shows for the 2026 New Year's Eve celebration. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo prohibited government and private institutions from lighting fireworks and firecrackers. The public was also urged to do the same.
Pramono stated that the decision was made as a form of solidarity for the disaster victims in Sumatra. "Indeed, the event was simple and empathetic towards the disaster victims," said Pramono at Bundaran HI, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday night, December 31, 2025. He claimed that the policy received wide support from the residents of Jakarta.
2. Drone Show Replacing Fireworks at Bundaran HI
As a substitute for fireworks, the Jakarta Provincial Government presented a drone show at Bundaran HI. The unmanned aerial vehicles formed various visuals in the night sky, including the words "Jakarta for Sumatra" and the map outline of Sumatra.
In addition to messages of solidarity, the drones also formed the words "Blok M Sentra ASEAN", the silhouette of the Jakarta International Stadium, and the slogan "Jakarta Must Support Persija." This show became a symbol of a simple celebration without excessiveness.
3. 2,000 Personnel Secure Car Free Night in Jakarta
To secure the Car Free Night (CFN) agenda, the police deployed 2,000 combined personnel along Jalan Sudirman to MH Thamrin. Security measures were implemented from South Jakarta to Central Jakarta.
The Director of Traffic of the Jakarta Metro Police, Commissioner General Komarudin, stated that the personnel were on standby to ensure that all New Year's Eve activities ran smoothly and safely.
4. TMII Cancels Fireworks, Holds a Thousand Candle Prayer
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) also canceled the fireworks show as a form of empathy for the disaster victims in Sumatra. The TMII management chose to hold a thousand candle prayer and an open fundraising event for visitors.
"TMII sees the New Year's Eve moment as a space for reflection, togetherness, and mutual strengthening," said TMII representative Ratri on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Despite the lack of fireworks, there were still various entertainment events held at TMII, such as music concerts, culinary festivals, and dancing fountain shows. The government and public space managers emphasized that the celebration continued, but without excessive extravagance.
5. Fundraising for Sumatra Disaster Victims
The Jakarta Provincial Government announced the donation results for the victims affected by the Sumatra disaster. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that until a few minutes before the transition from 2025 to 2026, the total amount of donations collected was around Rp3 billion.
He continued that the collected donations from the people of Jakarta would be distributed, both directly by the government and through the National Zakat Agency bases. "So, it will be distributed soon," said Pramono.
