How to Get to Prambanan Temple from Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, is well-known both nationally and internationally. This temple is one of the most visited destinations in Yogyakarta, attracting not only domestic but also international tourists. Apart from its fascinating history, the temple area also offers cultural, culinary, and natural attractions.

Prambanan Temple is often chosen as the venue for national and international events. This temple hosts several regular events, including Prambanan Jazz from July 4-6, 2025; Mandiri Marathon; Sendratari Ramayana and Roro Jonggrang; Pasar Medang; and Hindu religious celebrations.

Located at the border of Klaten, Central Java, the temple, built in the 9th century by King Rakai Pikatan of the Ancient Mataram Kingdom, can be accessed from various routes. Tourists from Yogyakarta can use private vehicles, online transportation, commuter trains (KRL), or Trans Jogja.

Here are the routes to Prambanan Temple from Yogyakarta by private vehicle or public transportation.

1. Private Vehicle

If departing from Malioboro, choose the route via Jalan Solo, then head to the border gate between Yogyakarta and Central Java. After that, continue along the road for about 300 meters, passing the first traffic light. Not far from there, the complex of Candi Prambanan will be visible on the left.

2. Online Transportation

Tourists can also use online transportation from Malioboro. The fare for an online motorcycle taxi to Prambanan Temple is around Rp45,000, while the fare for an online taxi is around Rp135,000. The distance is about 17 kilometers. The travel time to Prambanan Temple is approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the traffic conditions.

3. Trans Jogja

Trans Jogja, a bus service that operates in the Yogyakarta area, can also be used to reach Candi Prambanan. According to the Yogyakarta Provincial Transportation Agency website, Trans Jogja has several routes with a total of 267 stops. The fare is Rp3,600 per person, and payment is made using an electronic money card.

From Malioboro or Tugu Station, tourists can board the bus from the stop located on Jalan Malioboro, then take the Trans Jogja bus with route code 1A towards Prambanan Terminal. After that, walk about 500 meters to the entrance gate of Prambanan Temple.

If coming from Lempuyangan Station, take the Trans Jogja from the east side of the exit gate. Choose the Trans Jogja route 2B, then alight at the Cendana stop located on Jl. Kusumanegara. After that, transfer to Trans Jogja route 1A towards Prambanan Terminal.

From Adi Sutjipto Airport, tourists can take the Trans Jogja 1A route directly to Prambanan Terminal.

4. Commuter Train (KRL)

The Yogyakarta-Solo electric train (KRL) is a fast option to reach Prambanan Temple. Tourists can take the KRL from Lempuyangan or Tugu Station in the Malioboro area, and then alight at Brambanan Station. After that, take a motorcycle taxi to Prambanan Temple and enter through the east gate.
