TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have agreed on a new defense and security agreement. Albanese stated that the two countries have finished negotiating a defense and security cooperation agreement. He mentioned that this agreement signifies both nations' shared commitment to maintaining peace and stability.
"This agreement acknowledges that the best way to maintain peace and stability is by acting together," Albanese said aboard the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Canberra docked in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, as observed from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
He mentioned that this new agreement is a continuation of the landmark security agreement signed by the governments of Paul Keating and former President Soeharto 30 years ago. The two countries will also strengthen the Lombok Treaty between Indonesia and Australia on November 13, 2025.
The agreement, Albanese said, notably reaffirms the integrity and sovereignty of Indonesian territory. "It also builds upon the defense cooperation agreement we signed last year," he said.
Albanese stated that this agreement will bind Indonesian and Australian leaders and ministers to conduct regular consultations. "Consultations are carried out to identify and undertake mutually beneficial security activities," he said.
On the same occasion, President Prabowo stated that the two countries had reached an important agreement in defense and security. He considers Australia to be a good neighbor. "A good neighbor is very important. A good neighbor will assist others in difficult times. For us, Indonesians, we have a saying, When we face an emergency, a good neighbor will help," he said.
Prabowo departed for Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday afternoon, November 11, 2025. He arrived in Australia on Monday night. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that the one-day state visit would include several important agendas.
"During the one-day visit, the President is scheduled to have a tete-a-tete meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and attend state ceremonies led by Australia's Governor-General Sam Mostyn," said Teddy in his written statement on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
The Head of State will also attend several other meetings. These various meetings will discuss cooperation in trade, investment, education, and industrial partnerships. In this bilateral visit, the President is accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Before his departure, Prabowo chaired a closed-door cabinet meeting at the Indonesian Air Force Base Halim Perdanakusuma, Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The limited meeting was attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Head of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency Muhammad Yusuf Ateh, Head of the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center Ivan Yustiavandana, and Teddy Indra Wijaya.
