TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Singapore are preparing the 'Rising 60' initiative to mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. The program is envisioned as a momentum to refresh the strategic partnership between the two nations and set a new direction for cooperation over the next decade.
Foreign Minister Sugiono said that relations between Indonesia and Singapore over the past six decades have been anchored on strategic trust, mutual benefit, and shared goals.
"Rising 60 is more than just a diplomatic commemoration. It is an opportunity to refresh our partnership for the next few decades and to establish a new strategic direction for both countries," Sugiono said during a press conference with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan at the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The two ministers also reviewed the progress of several cooperative efforts that will be further deliberated during the Indonesia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat.
Energy and Industry Cooperation
Sugiono noted that Indonesia and Singapore discussed cross-border electricity trade, sustainable energy development, and energy investment. He mentioned that the project is anticipated to become one of the region’s largest sustainable electricity projects.
The two nations also agreed to broaden agribusiness and technology cooperation to bolster food security. In the industrial sector, Indonesia and Singapore will proceed with the development of the Batam-Bintan-Karimun and Kendal Industrial Parks in Central Java, while exploring the joint expansion of sustainable industrial zones.
"This is not just an economic project, but also an opportunity for both countries to provide more job opportunities, create chances, and improve the welfare of the people," said Sugiono.
Singapore's Confidence in Indonesia's Potential
Vivian remarked that the bilateral relationship between the two countries remains in excellent health. According to her, Singapore has been Indonesia's largest foreign investor for more than a decade.
"This reflects Singapore's trust and belief in Indonesia's long-term economic strength," she said. She assessed that Indonesia holds great potential in the energy sector, ranging from solar and geothermal to hydroelectric power.
"In fact, I see Indonesia as a powerhouse in the energy sector," Vivian said. According to her, this potential can complement Singapore's role as a regional center for technology and infrastructure financing.
In addition to bilateral ties, the two ministers affirmed their commitment to maintaining ASEAN's unity and centrality amid global uncertainties, including the impact of Middle East conflicts on energy supplies and global supply chains.
