TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo ensures the safety of its citizens in Japan following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook the northeastern region on Monday.

"Through communication and coordination with a number of Indonesian diaspora in Japan, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo received information that Indonesian citizens in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate are safe," said the embassy's coordinator for Social Cultural Informations, Muhammad Al Aula, according to a written statement received by Antara on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

According to Al Aula, shortly after the earthquake, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo immediately established communication with Indonesians living in Aomori, Hokkaido, and Iwate to ascertain, among other things, the safety, security, evacuation access, and food availability.

"At present, Indonesian citizens in the affected areas reported to have resumed activities as usual," said the embassy official.

He also mentioned that the embassy has yet to receive requests for urgent evacuation from Indonesians in the earthquake-affected areas.

Embassy records show about 1,000 Indonesian citizens staying in Aomori, 1,500 in Iwate, and 8,000 in Hokkaido.

Furthermore, Al Aula stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, together with the Consulate General in Osaka, continues to maximize efforts to protect Indonesian citizens, including coordination with relevant local authorities and following well-established disaster mitigation mechanisms.

The embassy urges all Indonesian citizens to remain calm and carry on with their activities while maintaining vigilance.

Indonesians are also encouraged to monitor the situation and follow instructions from local authorities, including learning evacuation routes and preparing emergency bags, essential documents, and sufficient cash.
