Indonesia Estimates Hundreds of Its Migrant Workers Are in Iran

3 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Manpower Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Mukhtarudin, estimated that the number of Indonesian migrant workers in Iran is only around 100. According to him, not many Indonesian citizens work there.

"On average, they are domestic workers," Mukhtarudin said when met at the KP2MI office in Jakarta on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Mukhtarudin mentioned that those working there are also individuals who went there on their own and were not placed by the government. He said that from the beginning, the government did not make Iran a placement country for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) because the region is prone to conflict. "So, that (PMI) is not our placement," he said.

He mentioned that until now, there have been no reports from migrant workers in Iran, either to KP2MI or the Indonesian embassy in Tehran. It is said that migrant workers in Iran are not affected by the war with the U.S. and Israel.

"There are no problems. This means they are still under the control of the Iranian government and also under our representatives' control," he said.

However, Mukhtarudin stated that the government will continue to monitor the situation in Iran and several conflict-affected regions. "Because the escalation continues to increase. So, we will continue to monitor and prepare emergency measures."

The escalation of conflict in the Middle East has peaked since the U.S. missile attack on Iran on Saturday, February 26, 2026. Iran retaliated by launching attacks on several U.S. military bases in the Gulf region, such as Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The war broke out after the U.S. and Iran failed to reach an agreement on the use of nuclear power in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 26, 2026.
