TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and France have signed 27 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with a total commitment value of US$11 billion.
These agreements cover collaboration in various sectors, including energy, transportation, food, health, telecommunications, education, and infrastructure.
The signing took place during the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Indonesia, which was held from May 27 to 29, 2025. Anindya Novyan Bakrie, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), stated that the MoUs were signed as part of a business forum attended by 368 delegates from both countries.
He emphasized that this cooperation represents a strategic move to strengthen the economic relationship between Indonesia and France.
Anindya also highlighted that the collaboration aligns with the broader goals of the European Union-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (EU-Indonesia CEPA). He noted that this partnership has the potential to generate significant benefits for Indonesia within the ASEAN region.
"Indonesia and France play a significant role in their respective regions. These two regions complement each other, rather than compete," said Anindya Bakrie in a written statement on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
During the same event, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that this initiative is expected to enhance bilateral ties between the two countries. He mentioned that 16 of the MoUs were signed in the presence of President Prabowo Subianto and President Macron. "The total value is around US$11 billion," said Airlangga.
Airlangga added that Indonesia and France share a similar approach to multilateral trade. He expressed the government's interest in expanding trade and investment opportunities with France.
Philippe Gautier, Chief Executive Officer of Mouvement des Entreprises de France (Medef) International, said that French companies are eager to deepen their cooperation with Indonesia. He confirmed that approximately 70 companies attended the business forum to witness the signing of the MoUs.
"We are interested in developing new strategies with Indonesia in various sectors, from infrastructure, clean energy, to new technologies," said Gautier in a press release issued by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
