TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the government is negotiating to free two tankers belonging to PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) that are still stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.
"There are two cargo ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz owned by Pertamina. The ships are currently docked to find a safer location while we negotiate," Bahlil said when met after an iftar (breaking of fast) event at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jakarta, Wednesday evening (March 4).
Pertamina has also ensured the safety of the ships' crews amid the ongoing war between the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East.
On the same occasion, Bahlil stated that the two tankers stuck in the Strait of Hormuz do not threaten Indonesia's energy security, as Indonesia is quickly seeking alternative energy sources in the United States.
"Geopolitics is not in good condition, but the government's readiness to design and prepare all alternatives for crude oil, fuel, and LPG, God willing, is safe," Bahlil said.
The search for alternatives is underway alongside the government's efforts to free two tankers stuck in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian media reported that the Strait of Hormuz had been "effectively" closed following a US-Israeli attack.
The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately one-fifth of global oil trade, as well as large volumes of liquefied natural gas exports from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
About 20 percent of global daily oil consumption, or about 20 million barrels, passes through the corridor.
PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) reported on Monday (March 2) that four vessels were in the Middle East: the Gamsunoro, currently loading in Khor al Zubair, Iraq; the Pertamina Pride, which has completed loading and is currently anchored in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia; the PIS Rinjani, currently anchored in Khor Fakkan, UAE; and the PIS Paragon, currently discharging in Oman.
Two vessels remain in the gulf: the Pertamina Pride, managed by NYK, and the Gamsunoro, currently managed by Synergy Ship Management. Both are being monitored in real time to ensure their safety.
"We are working to get both vessels out of the gulf as soon as possible. Currently, our fleet team is in close communication with the management to coordinate and ensure the safety of the crew and vessels," said Vega Pita, Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS.
