TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is conducting an in-depth investigation into the irregularities in the Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) ratings for games on the Steam platform, which are currently under public scrutiny.

Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at Kemkomdigi, stated that his office acknowledges that some games have IGRS ratings that do not reflect their content. For example, PUBG received a 3+ rating, while Upin Ipin Universe is intended for ages 18+.

"We find this very strange and highly unusual, which is why we are conducting this investigation to determine the underlying problem, both internally at Komdigi and externally at Steam," Sonny said at the Kemkomdigi office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sonny added that this investigation was conducted openly and involved various stakeholders, such as communities, associations, and game industry players, to identify the cause of the irregularities in game classification on the Steam platform.

Meanwhile, Steam has removed the IGRS rating labels from games circulating on its platform to prevent public confusion.

Sonny stated that Steam is also conducting an internal investigation into the game's misclassification and will announce the results once they are identified.

"So, those odd and strange ratings are no longer present. Steam has taken them down while they conduct their internal investigation," Sonny said.

The Indonesian Game Rating System (IGRS) is the official age classification system for video games in Indonesia, launched by the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi).

The IGRS defines several game classification categories based on age: 3+, 7+, 13+, 15+, and 18+.

The IGRS exists to protect consumers and serve as a guide for parents and children in choosing age-appropriate games.

Sonny stated that if problems are found in the implementation of the IGRS, the government is committed to resolving them to ensure consumer interests and protect the gaming industry.

"We must no longer allow a situation where, for more than 10 years, consumers and the industry have not received adequate protection and certainty regarding age ratings," he stressed.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is also committed to improving the implementation of the IGRS, both in terms of its systems and regulatory compliance mechanisms.

"So, digital products sold and distributed in Indonesia must have a rating, and we've simplified this into a rating so parents can ensure their children are playing games with an age-appropriate rating," said Sonny.
