TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is preparing its Marine Corps for a planned peacekeeping deployment to the Gaza Strip. The marines will form part of a wider Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) contingent assigned to the mission.

Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Erwin Aldedharma said preparations were underway following instructions from the government.

“The entire TNI is preparing to support the government’s policy,” Erwin said during the Marine Corps’ 80th anniversary ceremony in Cilandak, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 17, 2025.

The Navy is readying its purple-beret Marine Corps alongside other branches of the armed forces. Several specialized marine battalions are expected to join the mission, including engineering, medical, and logistics units.

Erwin said the number of personnel to be deployed had not yet been finalized. “The selection process is ongoing, and we have already gathered the names of the soldiers who may depart,” he noted.

He added that the military was still awaiting further guidance from the government before finalizing detailed preparations.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin announced Indonesia’s intention to send peacekeeping forces to Gaza, which has suffered two years of continuous Israeli bombardment. Sjafrie said the mission would focus on humanitarian support, particularly construction and medical assistance.

According to Sjafrie, the government is preparing up to 20,000 personnel for the mission. “Their expertise will be in health and construction,” he said at the Ministry of Defense office in Jakarta on Friday, November 14, 2025.

Sjafrie emphasized that Indonesia seeks a non-coercive peacekeeping role. “We prefer to take a humanitarian approach,” said the retired army general.

Indonesia’s contingent is expected to join an international peacekeeping force for Gaza. Discussions involving multiple countries are ongoing.

Sjafrie said there are two potential frameworks for forming the joint force: one under the United Nations, and another through an internationally supported initiative led by U.S. President Donald Trump.
