TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The subsidiary of Indonesia's electricity company, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), PT Biomassa Energi Group (BEG), and the Polish company G7 Group SP.Z.O.O plan to construct five biomass manufacturing plants. This comes after the successful operation of the first joint development of the pelletised oil palm empty fruit bunches.

"This will be followed by five additional plants with similar or larger capacities," said the legal advisor of G7 Group SP.Z.O.O, Rogowski Wojciech Marek, in a written statement on Friday, October 10, 2025.

The first plant, scheduled to operate in 2026, is targeted to produce 120 thousand tons of empty fruit bunch per year.

Marek conveyed this plan during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between his company, BEG, and PLN EPI to strengthen the supply chain and export of Indonesian biomass products to the global market, especially in Asia and Europe.

Marek believes that through this collaboration, the export volume of various Indonesian biomass products, such as palm kernel shells, palm oil waste wood pellets, and oil palm empty fruit bunches, could reach three million tons per year in the coming years.

He mentioned that the global demand for biomass continues to increase. According to Marek, Indonesia possesses all the factors to become a market leader. "Even before this MoU was signed, we had already prepared strategic steps to secure market share," Marek said.

The Director of Biomass at PLN EPI, Hokkop Situngkir, stated that Indonesia has the potential for approximately 130 million tons of biomass per year, but only a small portion is utilized. "We want to transform this significant potential into real opportunities, both for the national electricity system's decarbonization and to meet the global demand for green energy," said Hokkop.

Hokkop stated that PLN EPI not only serves as a primary energy provider domestically but is also starting to expand its business, such as biomass trading and sustainable fuel exports.

He also pledged that the company will continue to ensure the domestic biomass supply for the co-firing program, or the combustion of two types of materials in coal-fired steam power plants owned by PLN.
