TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The non-cash payment system based on the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) officially launched in Japan today, Sunday, August 17, 2025, coinciding with Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day.

"In the initial stage, Indonesian citizens can use QRIS at 35 merchants in Japan," said Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo in a written statement on Sunday.

To make payments with QRIS, users can scan JPQR Global using a domestic payment application.

Perry explained that Bank Indonesia is committed to expanding the number of merchants in Japan to make transactions easier for Indonesian citizens.

In the future, the use of QRIS will also be expanded for merchants in Indonesia to serve Japanese citizens visiting the country.

The launch of QRIS in Japan is a collaboration between Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), the Payment Japan Association (PJA), Netstars, and other financial institutions.

Since its launch six years ago, QRIS has been adopted by 57 million users. Perry noted that BI will continue developing new QRIS features to increase its adoption and support digital economic and financial inclusion.

"One of these innovations is international QRIS," he said.

He added that Bank Indonesia and the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) have also started interconnection trials between the two countries.

He hopes QRIS expansion to China can be realized once the trials are successfully completed.

Payment connectivity with China is expected to boost trade, particularly for SMEs, and encourage tourism in both countries. The trial involves ASPI, UnionPay International (UPI), and several payment service providers.

Bank Indonesia reported that Malaysia currently records the highest number of international QRIS transactions, with 4.31 million transactions worth Rp1.15 trillion since its launch in May 2023. Transactions with Thailand reached 994,890, totaling Rp437.54 billion since its launch in August 2022.
