TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The status of Rinjani Geopark as a part of the UNESCO Global Geopark network is currently under evaluation. The assessment from the revalidation carried out by the previous assessors will be held in September 2025 in Chile.
General Manager of Rinjani Geopark, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Qwadru P. Wicaksono, stated that the results of the revalidation during the assessors' visit to the geopark in June and July of 2025 will be discussed at the UNESCO meeting. The results of the revalidation assessment will be announced in April 2026.
"The information is that it will be in September in Chile. However, we don't know yet if we can attend. But it will be in September when the reevaluation assessment (revalidation) will be discussed by UNESCO," he said in Mataram, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, as reported by Antara.
Qwadru stated that several things caught the attention of the UNESCO assessors during the revalidation process. Among them is the incomplete availability of information boards at the Rinjani Geopark Information Center (PIGR) in Sembalun, East Lombok Regency.
Notes from the assessors were in addition to the information boards at PIGR Sembalun, particularly in Gili Trawangan, North Lombok Regency. The assessors highlighted the need for additional promotional materials in the waiting room to strengthen the information about the geopark. He ensured that all the notes from the assessors had been completed. "Insha Allah, we will complete everything that was noted by the assessors," he said.
Nevertheless, Qwadru is optimistic that Rinjani Geopark will still receive a green card as part of the Global Geopark network. This is because the assessors considered Rinjani Geopark to be quite comprehensive in terms of culture and community involvement.
"Rinjani Geopark received applause compared to other geoparks abroad. That's why, hopefully, we will continue to receive the green card. That's our hope," he said.
In 2018, Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island in NTB was designated a World Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Mount Rinjani is part of the Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR). One of its attractions is Lake Segara Anak, located at an altitude of 2,010 meters above sea level. Lake Segara Anak is located within Mount Rinjani, which stands 3,726 meters above sea level.
The Mount Rinjani National Park was reopened on August 10, 2025. The closure lasted 10 days, from August 1 to 10, 2025, to improve Mount Rinjani's climbing management. This includes setting conditions and regulations for climbers, guide services management, and entrance tickets. This management improvement follows several accidents that occurred on the Mount Rinjani climbing route.
