TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as well as the expected restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the Foreign Ministry said.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the development reflects the willingness of the parties involved in the conflict to pursue a diplomatic path.
“Indonesia sees this momentum as a positive beginning and encourages all sides to make the most of this opportunity to advance a sustainable peaceful resolution,” Yvonne said in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
She stressed that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve the conflict. For that reason, Indonesia’s contribution to easing tensions in the Gulf region will continue to be based on that approach.
Indonesia, she added, will also continue to support constructive diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a more permanent resolution to the conflict. Such efforts, according to Yvonne, must place the interests of civilians at the center.
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said the ceasefire creates an opportunity for the recovery of shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz.
“With this development, we hope it can evolve into a more permanent conflict resolution and bring positive impacts for our interests, both in terms of freedom of navigation and in the longer term,” Nabyl said.
He noted that the development would have implications not only for Indonesia, but also for the Gulf region and the wider international community.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran and said the Strait of Hormuz would soon reopen.
“I have agreed to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks. This will be a two-way ceasefire,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Following the announcement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) confirmed that talks with the United States would begin on Friday, April 10, in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Iran also said that the 10-point ceasefire proposal it submitted had been viewed by the United States as a basis for negotiations.
