TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian animation industry is gearing up for the release of 'Panji Tengkorak,' an animated adaptation of the legendary martial arts comic created by Hans Jaladra.
The making of this film spanned three years, as revealed by director Daryl Wilson, as comparisons are being made on social media between 'Panji Tengkorak' and 'Merah Putih One for All.' The two Indonesian animated films will premiere in cinemas across the country around the same time.
'Panji Tengkorak,' 3 Years in the Making
"It's natural to have differing opinions, especially since the release dates are close. But during the production process, 'Panji Tengkorak' involved a large team, with production taking more than three years," said Daryl Wilson in a press release received by Tempo on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
On the contrary, 'Merah Putih One for All' was reportedly produced in a much shorter timeline—less than a few months—and will be released in cinemas starting tomorrow, Thursday, August 14, 2025.
Meanwhile, 'Panji Tengkorak' will premiere on August 28, 2025.
According to the film's director, the crew behind 'Panji Tengkorak' are professionals in the animation industry. From the director of photography (DOP), lighting, scriptwriting, and prop design to visual effects, these people are experienced in the realms of animated films.
"A total of 250 crew members were involved in the making of 'Panji Tengkorak.' We were not in a hurry, and our target is not merely releasing (the movie),
but to present a quality film that satisfies the audience's expectations," explained the director handpicked by Falcon Pictures to direct this film.
Earlier, Bintang Takari, the animator behind the contentious animated film 'Merah Putih One for All,' in an explanation that went viral, said that the production only took three months. But this was swiftly denied by Endiarto, the director, who said the production started in September and ended in May. "While the three months were for post-production. Bintang and I reviewed the animation results three times," he told Tempo on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
Synopsis of 'Panji Tengkorak'
The film 'Panji Tengkorak' tells the story of a warrior named Panji who lives under the curse of dark arts after seeking revenge for the death of his wife. In his quest to end his suffering, Panji must pursue a sacred heirloom believed to free him, while being involved in a major conflict between kingdoms.
With a lineup of well-known voice actors such as Denny Sumargo, Aghniny Haque, Donny Alamsyah, Cok Simbara, Nurra Datau, Revaldo, Donny Damara, Prit Timothy, and Tanta Ginting, Falcon Pictures is optimistic that Panji Tengkorak will be one of the most impressive Indonesian animation works on the big screen this year.
