Indonesian Customs Waives Import Duties on International Competition Prizes

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Finance Ministry, through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, exempts import duties for passengers receiving international competition prizes. This policy is stipulated in Minister of Finance Regulation Number 34 of 2025, which came into effect on June 6, 2025.

"Prizes or awards in the form of medals, trophies, plaques, badges, or similar items are exempt from import duties," said Acting Head of Import Subdirectorate of Customs Technical Directorate of Customs and Excise Chairul in a virtual media briefing held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. Import duty exemptions are given for each competition category.

Additionally, the prizes will not be subject to import duties, value-added tax (VAT), or luxury goods sales tax (PPnBM). The prizes are also exempt from income tax (PPh).

This import duty exemption applies with several conditions. First, passengers must be Indonesian citizens receiving competition prizes or awards. Second, the items are prizes from international competitions, including but not limited to sports, science, art, culture, and religious fields.

Third, there should be documents or evidence of participating in international competitions from the Indonesian ministry, institutions, or institutions abroad, organizers of competitions or awards abroad, and national or international mass media.

Fourth, items in the negative list will not receive import duty exemptions. This category includes motor vehicles, excisable goods, and lottery or gambling prizes.
