Indonesian Dies in Malaysia; P2MI Confirms Migrant Worker Was Illegal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian citizen has died in Penang, Malaysia, after being detained by local authorities. The incident occurred last Saturday, August 2, 2025. The male Indonesian citizen was confirmed to be an illegal migrant worker.

"The deceased was an illegal migrant worker in Malaysia who sold coconut drinks and snacks in Bukit Jambul, Penang, Malaysia," said Deputy Minister of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection (P2MI) Christina Aryani when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Coordination with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang

In response to this incident, P2MI detailed that they have received a report. "Currently, through BP3MI Aceh, we are coordinating with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang to monitor the progress of the case," said Christina.

According to her, the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang received information from witnesses at the location that the victim was involved in a fight that resulted in a physical assault.

The body is currently at the General Hospital, with the cause of death stated as heart disease from the autopsy.

"At the moment, we are waiting for further investigation results from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Penang regarding the assault and cause of death," she said.

BP3MI Aceh has also visited the victim's family to express condolences and explain the situation of the incident. "The family hopes that the deceased's body can be repatriated to their hometown," said Christina.

Chronology from the Malaysian Police

As reported by Malay Mail, according to the Penang Police, on Saturday at 18:20, they received a report that the man had gone on a rampage and was carrying an iron rod in Block D, Taman Bukit Jambul.

Police arriving at the scene found the man attacking the officers, hitting the face and back of the head of one of the officers, and attempting to seize the officer's firearm.

Acting Penang Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stated that the Indonesian citizen suddenly fainted at the Sungai Nibong police station after being arrested. He was immediately taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

According to Alwi, they had received two police reports before the incident.

First, concerning the suspect's actions of breaking a resident's car window with an iron rod. Second, regarding the alleged burglary of a flat unit.

"Both acts were committed by the suspect before his violent outburst. Concerned for their safety, residents contacted the police after witnessing the man behaving in an uncontrollable and aggressive manner," he said.
