Indonesian Govt to Improve National Park Standard Procedure Following Mount Rinjani Incident

20 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stated that the government will improve the Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) across all national parks. The evaluation plan is based on the unfortunate incident of Brazilian climber, Juliana de Souza Pereira Marins, who tragically fell into the vicinity of Mount Rinjani crater in West Nusa Tenggara on June 21.

"We will prepare, fix the SOP, and improve the facilities. From the community itself to educate themselves so that they are not just following mountain climbing trends," he said in a written statement today, Monday, June 30, 2025.

Raja Juli conveyed this intention after meeting with the Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii in Jakarta today. The SOP evaluation, according to him, targets mountain climbing routes in Indonesia, not only for Mount Rinjani National Park.

In the same meeting, there was also a discussion about the installation of safety signboards in critical points. The regulator also plans to add security posts, and use radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and emergency locator transmitter (ELT) for emergency detection needs.

The Ministry of Forestry will also enhance the certification of tourist guides and climbers. There are also plans to develop a danger level classification system for climbing routes. The classification will direct climbers based on their experience and preparedness.

Mohammad Syafii stated that the increased capacity of SAR in all conservation areas is becoming more important. The local community and volunteers will also continue to be involved in SAR activities. "Including local porters who have extraordinary physical abilities, to be trained and prepared as part of the SAR potential," he said.

Raja Juli ensured that the government remains open to all evaluations from the public. "We actually welcome criticism as something productive, which is good, but equally important is awareness and preparedness," he said.

In the gathering, both parties also signed a memorandum of understanding and a cooperation agreement regarding emergency response in conservation areas. Their agreement includes educating the public about the importance of preparation and responsibility when engaging in conservation areas.

Climbing Rinjani is Not for Beginners

Chairperson of the Indonesian Mountain Guides Association, Rahman Mukhlis, previously confirmed that Mount Rinjani is not for beginner climbers. Rahman responded to discussions on social media regarding the recent accident at Mount Rinjani.

Mount Rinjani, which stands at an altitude of 3,726 meters above sea level, has a moderate level of difficulty. Climbers are expected to have prior experience climbing several mountains if they want to climb the second highest volcano in Indonesia. "Especially mountains above 2,500 meters," he said on June 27, 2025.

Rahman suggested that climbers should enhance their experience, for example, by climbing easier mountains. When wanting to climb Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara, one must be very prepared. "Prepare physical and technical abilities thoroughly, professional companionship is necessary," he said.
