Indonesian Minister Claims Satisfaction of Hajj Pilgrims Better in 2025 Than Last Year

Indonesia's Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar did not have much to say about the proposal to form a special committee or hajj special committee (pansus haji) for 2025 by the House of Representatives (DPR). Nasaruddin only stated that the level of satisfaction of pilgrims with the implementation of the 2025 Hajj is better compared to last year.

"The research results are clear, the satisfaction level of hajj pilgrims is better compared to last year," he said at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque is also awaiting the revision of the Hajj Law. He hopes that the DPR will soon ratify the regulation so that the Hajj Executing Agency can immediately lead the implementation of the Hajj.

The formation of the special committee was proposed by the House of Representatives Hajj Special Committee Task Force during the 25th Plenary Session of the House of Representatives at the Nusantara II Building, Senayan, on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Chairman of the DPR Hajj Special Committee Task Force, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, said that the proposal to form the 2025 Hajj special committee was made to follow up on various problems found in the implementation of the 2025 Hajj.

The DPR Task Force noted that the implementation of accommodation, consumption, transportation, and health services is still not optimal. According to Cucun, investigative steps are needed to ensure that all services are in accordance with the applicable agreements.

The special committee will investigate allegations of violations of legal provisions and policies that have been mutually agreed upon between the government and the DPR.

Hajj observer from the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Ade Marfuddi does not see the need to form a special committee (pansus) for the 2025 Hajj. According to him, the implementation of the 2025 Hajj did not present major problems that harmed pilgrims, such as the conduct of the annual ritual of the Muslim community in 2024. At that time, he said, the Ministry of Religion was suspected of abusing the 2024 Hajj quota. "There is no major problem or significant failure that harms Hajj pilgrims. I have not found any during the implementation of the 2025 Hajj," he said.

Ade stated that the implementation of the 2025 Hajj still has some issues. One of them is the syarikah system (local companies in Saudi Arabia) for the Hajj. He also noted that there is a mismatch between the contracts for accommodation, transportation, and consumption services and the reality on the ground. However, he considered these issues as normative. "They can still be resolved through digitalization adjustments," he said.

According to Ade, the formation of the hajj special committee will also not be effective. He is concerned that the formation of the 2025 Hajj special committee will not have any impact. "If a special committee is formed now, it might end up being just for show. In the end, it may involve negotiation, peace, and have no impact at all," he said.
