TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo visited the mortuary at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) on Friday, early morning, August 29, 2025. Listyo's visit was to pay respects to the deceased and to meet with the family of the online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol) who was killed in an incident involving a tactical police vehicle.

Listyo expressed his apologies to the family for the incident. "We convey our condolences and apologies from the institution," Listyo told reporters.

He also apologized to the entire ojol community and association after one of their colleagues became a victim. "I also apologize to the entire ojol extended family," Listyo said.

Based on Tempo's observation, Listyo arrived at the mortuary at 12:30 AM and didn't leave until around 1:45 AM. Listyo's eyes looked teary, as if he had just cried.

The Chairperson of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, previously confirmed that the ojol driver who was run over by a police tactical vehicle was declared dead on Thursday night. "The body is at DR Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital," Lily said when confirmed by Tempo tonight.

The incident is known to have occurred right in front of the Bendungan Hilir II flats. "There was a motorcycle taxi driver who fell and was hit. But the vehicle did not stop and just moved forward until it ran over the victim," said one of the flat's residents, Kevin, on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.

Kevin recounted that initially, the authorities were holding back protesters in the area around the Pejompongan gas station. Around 7.25 PM, the police tactical vehicle suddenly sped through the middle of the road without paying attention to the gathered crowd.

Based on a copy of the video received by Tempo, the police tactical vehicle appeared to continue driving even though the victim had fallen. Some protesters were seen trying to chase and stop the vehicle.

In addition to running over the ojol driver, the police also fired tear gas towards the flats. "Residents on the tenth floor are still smelling tear gas," said Kevin.

According to Kevin, the tear gas was fired by the police from a distance of about 10 to 20 meters from the entrance gate of the flats. "Elderly and children near the gate were also affected by the tear gas," said Kevin.
