TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, announced that the police force has saved 35.7 million Indonesians from the threat of drugs over the past year.
He made the statement during a speech commemorating the 79th anniversary of National Police Day at Monas Square, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
"In the effort to eradicate drugs, the National Police, along with the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and related ministries and agencies, has saved 35.7 million lives of Indonesian citizens from the dangers of drugs," said Listyo Sigit, as quoted from a written statement received by Tempo on Tuesday.
He said the National Police, as the lead agency in this effort, had handled 23,456 drug-related cases throughout the year. These cases involved 32,403 suspects. Authorities also confiscated large quantities of narcotics with a total estimated value of Rp6.97 trillion.
"The evidence of various types of drugs is worth Rp6.97 trillion," said Listyo.
He emphasized that the total amount of drugs seized represents an estimated 35.7 million lives saved. The National Police also focused on mapping and intervening in areas heavily affected by drug trafficking. According to police data, there were 325 villages classified as drug-prone.
"We have transformed 145 of these drug-infested villages into drug-free villages, with 1,543 drug abuse victims," he said.
Referring to a report on jogja.polri.go.id, General Listyo Sigit had previously outlined the institution’s achievements in drug eradication between 2020 and 2024. Over that period, the police confiscated narcotics valued at Rp 31.8 trillion, which, according to the police, is equal to saving around 262 million lives from the dangers of drugs.
"If this spreads in society, it will certainly have an impact on approximately 262 million lives that we can save from the influence and dangers of drugs," said the Kapolri at the DPR building complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
During the same occasion, he also reported that from 2020 to 2024, the police arrested 264,188 suspects in drug-related offenses. In addition to narcotics, police also seized assets worth around Rp 1.55 trillion tied to these cases.
