TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian women's tennis player Janice Tjen has secured the WTA 125 Jinan Open title in China on Saturday, October 18, 2025. She defeated Hungarian tennis player Anna Bondar in the final with 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Janice, who was the third seed in the tournament, managed to overcome Bondar, the second seed, in two hours and 25 minutes, as noted by the WTA. Her opponent was able to record more aces, while the 23-year-old Jakarta native created more break point opportunities, converting three out of 11, making her serve a powerful weapon.
Janice began her journey in the Jinan Open with a tough battle in the opening round, followed by a straight-set victory in the second round and quarterfinals. She encountered difficulties in the semifinals but successfully defeated her opponent, who was the sixth seed, to reach the final.
This marks Janice's first title in the singles category on the WTA tour. Previously, she and compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi claimed the WTA 125 Suzhou doubles title in China earlier this month.
Prior to the Asian tour, the currently 98th-ranked player in the world was the runner-up in her WTA debut at the WTA 250 Sao Paulo in Brazil last month. Her performance in that championship served as a stepping stone, catapulting her from 130th in the world to 103rd.
The Jinan Open title adds to Janice's list of successes this year, following her successful appearance in her debut Grand Slam, the US Open. In the US hard court major, Janice did not drop a set in the three qualifying round matches to advance to the main draw. She performed brilliantly with a first-round victory over Veronika Kudermetova before being defeated by Emma Raducanu in the second round.
Janice also made history by ending Indonesia's long wait for a female singles player at a Grand Slam, the last representation being Angelique Widjaja at the 2004 US Open.
According to WTA records, before arriving in New York for the US Open qualifiers, Janice Tjen had won 45 out of her last 50 professional matches. During this period, she reached nine ITF finals, won six titles, and rose more than 200 spots, climbing from 371st to 149th in the rankings.
