TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran's parliament is preparing a bill on the Strait of Hormuz that would ban military and commercial vessels from countries deemed "hostile" from entering the Gulf without Tehran's permission.
Ibrahim Azizi, chair of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the bill is one of the most important and advanced laws since the nationalization of Iran's oil industry.
According to the state news agency IRNA, Azizi said the law prohibits military and commercial vessels belonging to countries deemed "hostile" from passing through the Gulf without Iran's approval.
He said the plan aims to strengthen Iran's authority and control over the Strait of Hormuz, as quoted by ANTARA.
On August 9, the committee's spokesperson, Hassan Ghashghavi, said his committee had approved a bill aimed at ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf and promoting sustainable development in both regions.
The situation in the region has remained tense since the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran began in late February. Tehran and Washington have yet to reach a final agreement to end the confrontation.
Meanwhile, the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt the global energy supply chain.
