TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Viada Hafid, is encouraging the public to adopt embedded SIM (e-SIM) technology as a precautionary step to combat mobile-related fraud. According to Meutya, several operators have already begun actively promoting the use of e-SIMs.
“We're currently focusing on raising awareness and educating the public. Hopefully, people will make the switch to e-SIM voluntarily to reduce the risk of fraud or data breaches,” she stated in Jakarta on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Meutya emphasized that e-SIM technology offers a promising solution to prevent identity misuse in telecom services, such as instances where multiple SIM cards are registered using someone else’s personal information or when a single device is used for dozens of phone numbers.
"In principle, e-SIM responds to input from the public regarding fraud using someone else's National Identification Number on mobile devices," said Meutya at Gelora Bung Karno.
She revealed that there are currently around 350 million active SIM cards in Indonesia, while the population is only about 280 million. The large discrepancy is suspected to stem from the practice of registering with false identities or other people's identities.
Currently, Komdigi is gradually updating SIM card data while continuously introducing the use of e-SIM to the public. However, there is no policy yet that obligates all mobile phone users to switch to e-SIM.
