Israel Claims to Intercept Missile Launched from Yemen

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military announced that it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen on Sunday, July 6, 2025. In an official statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the missile was targeting Israeli territory and that the air defense system was activated to prevent the attack.

According to a report by Times of Israel, warning sirens were heard in several areas as part of standard procedures. The IDF also advised the public to follow instructions from the Home Front Command. A day earlier, the military had reported that another missile from Yemen was “likely intercepted.”

Houthi Claims Responsibility, Israel Warns of Blockade

The Houthi rebel group in Yemen claimed responsibility for the earlier attack on June 28. Quoted by The Jerusalem Post, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group launched a missile at Beersheba, Israel, as an expression of support for Gaza.

Since the Israel–Hamas conflict began in October 2023, the Iran-backed Houthi group, which controls much of Yemen, has frequently targeted Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea. These attacks have disrupted global trade routes, although most of the missiles and drones have either been intercepted or failed to reach their targets.

In response, Israel has conducted several retaliatory strikes on Yemeni territory. Israeli authorities have warned they may impose a full air and sea blockade on Yemen if the Houthi continue their assaults. The warning is intended to pressure the group to stop its military support for Gaza.

Warnings from Yemen and the United States

One day before the latest attack, Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani warned that Iran was trying to relocate part of its military production to areas under Houthi control.

He claimed Iran is seeking to manufacture ballistic missiles and drones in the provinces of Sa'da, Hajjah, and near the capital Sanaa.

"International indifference to this action will be very costly for the region and the world, and will give Iran the opportunity to turn Yemen into a workshop for prohibited weapons programs and a missile base for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," Eryani said.

Meanwhile, United States Air Force Lieutenant General Alexus Grynkewich told members of Congress on June 24 that the Houthi are likely to remain a threat to U.S. interests going forward.

Despite a recent agreement between the U.S. and the Houthi to suspend air operations, Grynkewich said the threat has not diminished. The Houthi, for their part, stressed that the agreement does not apply to Israel. The group has continued to express support for Palestine, including through large public demonstrations in Sanaa.
