Israel Ramps Up Gaza Attacks as Netanyahu Prepares for US Visit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military expanded its operations in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. This move was made ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump next week.

According to Channel News Asia, several Palestinian residents in Gaza reported intense gunfire and artillery shelling from Israeli forces in various areas, including the northern and southern parts of Gaza.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military said it had expanded operations to additional areas within the Gaza Strip, killing dozens of Palestinian fighters and destroying hundreds of structures.

Air strikes and bombings in Gaza have reportedly intensified in the past week.

Raafat Halles, a resident of Shujaiya District in Gaza City, said that Israeli tanks continue to advance towards the settlement. "I believe that every time negotiations or a potential ceasefire are mentioned, the army escalates crimes and massacres on the ground," he said.

Another resident, Amer Daloul, also stated that clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighter groups have sharply escalated in the past few days.

He admitted that he and his family were forced to evacuate their tent early on Tuesday due to heavy and indiscriminate gunfire and bombings.

A similar situation is unfolding in southern Gaza. Mohammed Abdel Aal, a resident of Rafah City, said that Israeli tanks are now present in almost all parts of the city.

This operation is taking place amid increasing international pressure to end the war.

As reported by CBS News, President Trump expressed hope that a ceasefire agreement could be reached soon. "I hope a ceasefire agreement would be reached sometime next week," Trump said.

However, Israeli military attacks continue. The Gaza civil defense agency reported 17 fatalities on the same day. The Ministry of Health in Hamas-controlled areas stated that the total death toll since the start of the war had reached 56,647.

However, journalists based in Gaza have faced difficulties in independently verifying casualty reports due to access restrictions and unsafe conditions.

About 169 humanitarian organizations have called for an end to a new aid distribution system known as the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), supported by the U.S. and Israel.

According to a CBS News report, the group stated that the GHF forces civilians to walk for hours through dangerous terrain and active conflict zones, only to face chaos and violence when vying for food. They urged the reinstatement of the previous UN-operated aid distribution system, which was discontinued in March 2025.
