TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Six Syrian army officers were killed in an Israeli drone attack in southern Damascus. Syrian government TV, El Ekhbariya, reported that the attack occurred a day after Syria condemned Israel's new military strike outside the capital.
The Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles targeted Syrian army positions in the rural area near the city of al-Kiswah, according to a broadcaster's report on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025, cited by Al Jazeera.
Since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime last December, Israel has launched hundreds of attacks targeting military locations and assets throughout Syria. Israel has also expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, an action that violates the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry stated on Monday that Israel had deployed 60 soldiers to take control of areas inside the Syrian border around Mount Hermon. There has been no response from Israel.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani accused Israel of constructing intelligence facilities and military posts in the demilitarized area to advance its expansion and separation plans.
Earlier this month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu outlined his vision for Greater Israel, a concept supported by ultra-nationalist Israelis claiming territories in the occupied West Bank, Gaza, and parts of Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Jordan.
A coalition of 31 Arab and Islamic countries, as well as the Arab League, stated that such a stand constitutes a clear and dangerous violation of international law and the stable foundations of international relations.
Israel's latest military action in Syria follows deadly clashes in the province of Suwayda, Syria, where the majority of the population is Druze. There, sectarian violence during a week in July left 1,400 dead before a ceasefire ended the bloodshed. Israel has launched attacks on Syrian forces and bombed the heart of the capital, Damascus, under the pretext of protecting Druze residents.
