TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The EU Border Assistance Mission at the Rafah Crossing (EUBAM Rafah) is set to resume operations following a ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance group Hamas and Israel.
On Friday, October 10, 2025, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced that the crossing is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as reported by Antara.
The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect last Friday at 12:00 p.m. local time.
As part of the agreement, the Israeli military began withdrawing from Palestinian cities to the agreed-upon lines but remains entrenched in several key areas of the region.
"The Rafah crossing, on October 14, 2025, in compliance with the Trump agreement, in coordination between the European Union and the parties, will be opened alternately in two directions: exit to Egypt and entry to Gaza," stated Crosetto, as quoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Crosetto said the decision was made after consulting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, based on a security assessment by the Joint Operations Command, as quoted by Anadolu.
EUBAM Rafah aims to establish a third-party presence at the Gaza-Egypt border and bolster the Palestinian authorities' border management capacity.
According to Crosetto, Israel is currently working to speed up the restoration of the crossing's infrastructure.
"Approximately 600 articulated trucks carrying humanitarian aid will flow into Gaza from other (non-Rafah) crossings every day. The passage of personnel will not be limited to serious medical cases, but will be extended to anyone who wishes," he added.
Separately, Minister Tajani emphasized Italy's readiness to further contribute to peace efforts in the region.
"We can send the Carabinieri (national gendarmerie), we can send army troops. We have Carabinieri who are already in Palestine, so they know the territory. If this request comes, we are ready to do our part to build peace, to build the Palestinian state of the future. We are ready and have been on the front lines for some time now providing humanitarian aid," said Tajani at a press conference in Rome.
On September 29, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 20-point plan to end the conflict in Gaza. The plan included an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages within 72 hours.
The plan required Hamas and other factions to cease their involvement in the Gaza government, which would transfer power to a "technocratic and apolitical Palestinian committee" under the supervision of an international council led by Trump.
On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Trump announced that Hamas and Israel had signed the first phase of the Gaza peace agreement. This included the release of all hostages held by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces to agreed-upon lines.
