Jakarta Cuts Sidewalks on TB Simatupang to Ease Traffic Congestion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Government has temporarily trimmed some sidewalks in the T.B. Simatupang area for use as a vehicle lane. The measure is a direct response to ongoing traffic congestion caused by the installation of water and gas pipelines.

"The sidewalks that are utilized are not along the entire T.B. Simatupang. There are only seven short points where construction is taking place," said Governor Pramono Anung during a press conference at City Hall on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Pramono stated that this temporary traffic engineering policy will be in effect until November. He assured the public that the government does not intend to permanently convert the sidewalks into vehicle lanes. "This is only temporary, to reduce congestion and for engineering purposes," he said.

In addition to this short-term solution, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also preparing long-term options to ease congestion in T.B. Simatupang.

Pramono mentioned that plans for building overpasses and increasing the number of city toll exits are currently being assessed by the Transportation Agency.

"We are considering whether to open up another exit on the toll road so that it won't be like it is now," he explained.

He stressed that the construction project causing the congestion is scheduled to be completed by November 2025, at which point the temporary use of the sidewalks will cease.
