TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, has instructed all of his personnel to oversee the labor protest at the parliament complex today in a humane manner, stressing that tear gas can only be deployed upon his direct orders.
Speaking at a briefing at the parliament complex, Asep said repressive action can only be imposed on agitators among the protesters.
"Repressive actions are to be carried out only by the Reskrim (criminal investigation) unit against agitators. The use of tear gas can only be carried out upon direct orders from the Police Chief," he said during the briefing on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
He warned the police members against taking individual actions. Instead, the personnel must act in a cohesive manner while continuously coordinating with field commanders.
The Police Chief emphasized that no personnel are to carry firearms or engage in aggressive actions. If prohibited items such as Molotov cocktails or sharp weapons are found, he instructed his personnel to seize the items according to procedure.
A total of 4,531 joint security personnel consisting of police and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) were deployed to guard the labor protest today.
The joint personnel consists of 2,174 members of the Jakarta Metro Police, 1,725 personnel under the Command of the Indonesian National Police Headquarters (Mabes Polri), the TNI, the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) of Mabes Polri, as well as Regional Police (polres) deploys 632 personnel.
Around 3,000 protesters began to flood Gatot Subroto street starting at 09:00 a.m. to protest in front of the Parliament Complex.
The protesters consist of the Confederation of Indonesian Labor Unions (KSPI), the Confederation of All-Indonesian Workers Union (KSPSI), the Confederation of All-Indonesian Labor Union (KSBSI), and the Confederation of Indonesian United Workers (KPBI).
Labor Party President Said Iqbal ensured that laborers were holding a peaceful protest. "I call for the August 28 demonstration to be peaceful, orderly, without any disturbances, and free from violence," Said stated in his remarks on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
