TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, has apologized for the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol) who was crushed by a police mobile brigade's tactical vehicle around the Bendungan Hilir II flats area, Central Jakarta. The tragic incident occurred when the Brimob vehicle was dispersing a protest in the area on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
Asep expressed his condolences over the incident. He stated that he had met with the victim's family to seek forgiveness for the incident. "Earlier, I met with the deceased's family. Alhamdulillah, they have also accepted us," Asep said during a press conference at the DR. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital in Central Jakarta on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Asep promised to take action against the police mobile brigade personnel involved in the incident. "This tragedy serves as a lesson for everyone. I assure you that the members who made mistakes and violations in the incident this afternoon will be dealt with," he said.
The Chairperson of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, strongly condemned the actions of the police mobile brigade unit that crashed into the protest crowd. She called on the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to take responsibility for the incident that resulted in the death of her fellow professional. "This repressive action resulted in casualties and injuries," Lily told Tempo following the incident.
Lily urged all ojol drivers in Indonesia to close ranks and monitor the case closely. She called for a thorough investigation into the incident of the ojol driver's death due to being crushed by the tactical vehicle. "We also seek the support of the public in monitoring the developments of this event to prevent further violent actions that cause casualties," Lily said.
The Chairperson of the National Ojol Coalition Presidium, Andi Kristiyanto, stated that tonight, ojol drivers visited the Police Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police in Kwitang, Central Jakarta. Their presence at the police headquarters was due to the death of their colleague, who was crushed by the tactical vehicle.
In addition to visiting Mako Brimob Kwitang, Andi said that his colleagues also crowded the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital to pay their respects to the deceased. "They are pressing the police, especially Brimob, to take responsibility," Andi said.
Andi mentioned that the police tactical vehicle that crushed the ojol driver immediately fled after the incident. This situation incited the protesters who witnessed it to become angry and chase after the vehicle. "The vehicle being chased entered Mako Brimob Kwitang," Andi said.
From a circulating video, the victim was crushed by the tactical vehicle when the police were dispersing the protest crowd in the Bendungan Hilir II flats area, Central Jakarta. According to one of the residents of the low-cost apartment, Kevin, the police vehicle ran over the ojol driver who had fallen in the middle of the road. "An ojol fell and was hit. But the vehicle didn't stop; instead, it continued forward and crushed the victim," Kevin told Tempo on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Kevin explained that initially, the authorities were holding back the protesters in the area around the Pejompongan gas station. At around 7:25 PM WIB (Indonesian Western Time), the police tactical vehicle sped through the middle of the road, ignoring the crowd that had gathered.
In addition to crushing the protesters, the police also fired tear gas towards the low-cost apartment. "Even residents on the tenth floor could still smell the tear gas," Kevin said.
Kevin revealed that the tear gas was fired by the police from a distance of about 10 to 20 meters from the apartment entrance. "Elderly people and children near the entrance were also affected by the tear gas," Kevin said.
