TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers became victims of being run over by the police mobile brigade's tactical vehicles of the Jakarta Metro Police on Thursday, August 28, 2025. From the incident, one person was confirmed dead at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital (RSCM). Meanwhile, another one suffered a broken leg and is being treated at Pelni Hospital, West Jakarta.
The Chairperson of the Indonesian Transport Workers' Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, mentioned that the deceased victim was named Affan Kurniawan, while the survivor of this incident is Moh Umar Amarudin. "The victim died at RSCM. The victim with a broken leg is at Pelni Hospital," said Lily to Tempo on Thursday night.
Lily strongly condemned the repressive actions carried out by the police personnel in securing the mass protest. She urged all ojol drivers to unite and stand together to monitor this case to completion and resolve it fairly.
"We ask for the public's support in monitoring the development of this event to prevent violent actions that cause victims," said Lily, while stating, "The Police Chief must take responsibility for the deaths and injuries."
Contrary to Lily's statement, the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, stated that there was only one victim in the police mobile brigade tactical vehicle incident. "For the victim this afternoon, there was only one. As for the others, I haven't received the data yet," said Asep when confirmed by the media at RSCM. His presence at the hospital was to convey an apology to the family of Affan Kurniawan.
From the circulating video, it can be seen that the ojol driver was run over by a tactical vehicle as the police dispersed the protest crowd in the area of Bendungan Hilir II flats, Central Jakarta. According to an eyewitness, Kevin, the tactical vehicle ran over the ojol driver, who fell in the middle of the road. "There was a motorcycle taxi driver who fell and was hit. But the vehicle did not stop, but instead continued forward and ran over the victim," said Kevin, a resident of Bendungan Hilir II flats, to Tempo on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
This incident then sparked condemnation from the public. Dozens of ojol drivers went to the Police Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters of the Jakarta Metro Police in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, shortly after the incident. The crowd persisted and gathered on the east side of the authorities' headquarters until 3:00 AM.
