TEMPO.COJakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has called on the Indonesian National Police to ensure that the entire investigation process into the explosion case at SMAN 72 Jakarta high school adheres to the Child Protection Law and the Juvenile Justice System Law. KPAI Chair Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah asserts that the status of the suspected student must be the primary consideration for investigators.

"Because the suspected perpetrator is still a minor, the entire investigation process must take into account the perspective of the child," said Margaret to Tempo on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Margaret conveyed that KPAI has reviewed the condition of the suspected student at Cempaka Putih Hospital. She stated that the physical condition of the child is improving, but still undergoing medical treatment. "We are unable to conduct direct interviews because the person is still under medical care," said Margaret.

She also reminded the public to respect the privacy of the identity of the child being examined. "We ask all parties to adhere to the prohibition of publishing the child's name, address, and photo," said Margaret. "We do not yet know the whole truth, so it is best to wait for the results of the police investigation."

The explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta occurred on Friday, November 7, 2025, around 12:30 PM local time. At the time of the incident, students and teachers were performing the Friday prayer in the school's prayer room located in the Kodamar Complex, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta.

The explosion occurred twice. The first explosion originated from the prayer room on the third floor, followed by a second explosion a few minutes later from the back area of the cafeteria. The incident resulted in at least 96 people being injured, including the suspected perpetrator.

The police suspect that the explosion was planned by a student from the same school. Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the police have detained the student and are currently investigating his identity, environment, and place of residence.

"We are still examining the motive for the student to assemble and detonate an explosive device at the school," said Sigit at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday, November 7, 2025. "We will provide a comprehensive explanation after obtaining all information, on-site findings, and completing a full investigation and inquiry."
